Over the past 3 years, Engaged Citizens, Responsive City project supported by the European Union has built 250 Settlement Improvement Committees (SICs) as organisations of the urban poor in Ajmer, Jhansi and Muzaffarpur, empowering urban poor communities to demand basic sanitation services in their settlements.

PRIA in association with the Local Self Government Department Rajasthan, HCM-RIPA (Rajasthan State Institute of Public Administration) and City Managers' Association Rajasthan organized a one-day orientation training workshop for elected representatives of urban local bodies. The workshop was attended by 31 elected councilors from 5 ULBs of Beawar, Vijainagar, Parbatsar, Kekri, and Ajmer. The Mayor of Ajmer Nagar Nigam and Chairpersons of Beawar Nagar Parishad and Parbatsar Nagar Palika also participated in the orientation workshop. The program was structured in 3 interactive sessions focusing on rapid assessment, processes & methods of solid waste management and roles & responsibilities of elected representatives.

PRIA in association with Jhansi Municipal Corporation organized a one-day orientation training workshop for elected representatives of urban local bodies. The workshop was attended by around 30 representatives from 7 ULBs of Jhansi Division. These ULBs include Nagar Palika Parishad of Samthar and Mauranipur, Nagar Panchayat of Tori Fatehpur, Baragaon, Moth, Garautha and Nagar Nigam Jhansi. Chairpersons of Samthar Nagar Palika Parishad, Baragaon Nagar Panchayat, Tori Fatehpur Nagar Panchayat, and Garautha Nagar Panchayat also participated in the orientation training. The program was structured in 3 interactive sessions focusing on solid waste management rules & the need for solid waste management, processes & methods of solid waste management and citizen engagement.

In its second meeting, the citizen forum deliberated and formulated action plans on the following: Citizen monitoring framework: A core group will work on this monitoring framework in their respective areas and will share the experiences with all members during subsequent meetings. Safe city campaign: Safety is the concern for all citizens and especially the safety of women and girls in the city. The citizen forum will discuss the strategies and their role in making the city safer for all Decentralized SWM in the city: Following up with the zero waste city roadmap, the forum will look for possibilities of participatory SWM in market areas and wards.

The seminar, “How to hide injustices for centuries: Lessons from India’s public policies on sanitation workers” was organised by Participatory Research in Asia (PRIA). The seminar was first in the series as part of “Engaged Citizen, Responsive City” (ECRC) project which is being implemented by PRIA with support from the European Union. The main aim of the seminar was to present insights into the everyday struggles of sanitation workers all over India, with a specific focus on the plight of women sanitation workers in India.

A meeting of Jhansi ‘Citizen Forum’ was held on 29 November 2018. A ‘Citizen Forum’ at the city level, formed under the ongoing Engaged Citizens, Responsive City project, includes citizens from across the city in actively working together to demand improvement in sanitation services from the municipality.

Safe sanitation is a basic necessity for a healthy life and maintaining well-being. Over the past three years, PRIA has been working in Ajmer, Jhansi and Muzaffarpur to promote safe sanitation systems and practices with the active participation of citizens in the planning and monitoring of sanitation services. This work is being conducted as part of the Engaged City, Responsive Citizens (ECRC) project.

31 अक्टूबर को विश्व शहर दिवस के अवसर पर प्रिया संस्था द्वारा समावेशी शहर की थीम पर मुजफ्फरपुर शहर में सप्ताह व्यापी अभियान में अलग-अलग कार्यक्रमों के माध्यम से शहरों में सतत विकास और समावेशी शहर की अवधारणा पर चर्चा की गयी I इसी क्रम में हमारी आने वाली पीढ़ी शहरी विकास को किस रूप में देखती है, उनके सपनों का शहर कैसा हो जहाँ वे रहना चाहते है, विषय पर पेंटिंग का कार्यक्रम आयोजित किया गया I मुजफ्फरपुर स्थित जुब्बा साहनी पार्क में अलग- अलग आयु वर्ग के बच्चों ने पेंटिंग के माध्यम से अपने सपनों के शहर को उकेरा I इस कार्यक्रम में स्लम बस्तियों तथा शहर की सामान्य बस्तियों के बच्चों ने एक साथ पेंटिंग की I

सक्रिय नागरिकए क्रियाशील शहर कार्यक्रम अंतर्गत स्वच्छता सेवाओं के स्थायी समाधान व जनसहभागिता के साथ व्यवहार परिवर्तन के लिए 31 अक्टूबर से सप्ताहव्यापी अभियान के पहले दिन वार्ड नंबर 4 के किलाबांध स्लम में वाक द टॉक का आयोजन किया गयाप् इस आयोजन का उद्देश्य अनियमित बस्ती के लोगों एवं शहर के उच्च एवं माध्यम वर्ग के लोगों के बीच संपर्क की खाई को पाटना था

सक्रिय नागरिक क्रियाशील शहर कार्यक्रम अन्र्तगत स्वच्छता सेवाओं के स्थायी समाधान व जनसहभागिता के साथ ब्यवहार परिवर्तन हेतु 31 अक्टूबर से प्रिया द्वारा सप्ताहव्यापी अभियान संचालित किया गया जिसके तहत सर्वप्रथम 04 प्रमुख दैनिक समाचार पत्रों के माध्यम से 4000 पम्फलेट्स वितरण, शहर क्षेत्र में किया गया जिसे शहरी क्षेत्र के नागरिकों ने पढ़ा और गरीबों की भलाई व अनियमित बस्तीयों में रहने वाले लोगों के प्रति संवेदित हुए।
