I must admit I am a ‘junkie’ for republic day parade. I have watched it on TV for decades; I have also participated in school parades in earlier days. I assumed that we are now an independent nation—India! We are our own governors & managers now. Republic means governing our society is a ‘public affair---where citizens govern public good’. Today Indians celebrate 70th Republic Day, the day on which a constitution of new India was adopted. Indian Constitution provides the basis for ‘citizens to govern public affairs’ in our republic. PRIA’s mandate on citizen participation and democratic governance is rooted in this vision of the new Republic. ‘Governance where people matter’ is not merely a slogan, but PRIA’s commitment to the spirit of the Republic. How many citizens are willing to participate in the affairs of governance for public good? Are citizens governing public goods, or a handful of politicians and bureaucrats? Or, perhaps a few rich elite? By negating knowledge and wisdom of ordinary Indians, their participation in everyday governance of public affairs is structurally blocked. Participatory Research perspective of PRIA gives value to popular knowledge. Our Constitution starts with…”We the People of India”…and then describes its core values in the Preamble itself.... Justice... Do citizens care for justice to all? Liberty... Liberty of expression, assembly, faith---to be practiced without hurting others? Equality... In a culturally hierarchical society, inequality of status is deep-rooted, still? Fraternity... Fraternity without tolerance of diversity is creating conditions for coercion. These values of our Constitution are not merely for classroom study, but practice in everyday life. PRIA’s campaign on Youth-n-Democracy is focusing on practice of constitutional values by youth in everyday life. When citizens take responsibility for governing the public affairs for public good, a republic is strengthened, and sustained over generations.

India’s Gram Panchayats today govern at a time of profound transition. Climate change is intensifying floods, droughts, and heat stress, public health risks such as water-borne diseases are becoming more frequent, rural youth migration is hollowing out local economies and digital systems are expanding faster than local capacities to use them meaningfully.
