The UNESCO Chairs and Partners Forum, under the patronage of H.E. Sahle-Work Zewde, President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, convened for a conference titled "Transforming Knowledge for Africa’s Future" in Addis Ababa from 30th September to 2nd October 2024. This gathering occurs at a crucial moment in global development, where humanity faces an urgent choice between further breakdown or breakthrough. The decisions made during this time will determine whether the future is plagued by crises or characterized by sustainability and peace. To ensure a more just and sustainable future, it is essential to rethink how knowledge is generated, validated, and applied.
As Africa seeks to transform its knowledge systems, a significant shift is needed, particularly in education and skills development. Knowledge must be leveraged to drive Africa's development, in line with Agenda 2063, the continent’s blueprint for becoming a global powerhouse. However, challenges persist, including the dominance of Global North institutions in African research. To unlock Africa’s potential, a paradigm shift is required in how knowledge is produced, shared, and utilized, with a stronger focus on inclusivity and collaboration across disciplines, sectors, and cultures.
The Forum aims to strengthen Africa’s research capacity through inclusive partnerships, including South-South and South-South-North collaborations. Its objectives include exploring Africa's future research and innovation landscape, enhancing research partnerships, and discussing policies necessary for knowledge-driven economies. The Forum also focuses on improving access to knowledge for marginalized communities, building a skilled workforce, and fostering knowledge exchange. Organized by UNESCO and the African Union Commission, the Forum will bring together 500 participants, including UNESCO Chairs, African think tanks, civil society organizations, and international development partners to discuss and shape Africa’s future.
