The National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA), in association with Delhi Development Authority (DDA), is preparing the next Master Plan of Delhi 2041 (MPD-2041). MPD 2041 will be a long-term dynamic document, guiding future growth and development in the city.

Every planning process requires public engagement. The young population of Delhi forms the most significant part of its human capital. As per Economic Survey of Delhi 2019-20, 30.3% of the population belongs to the age cohort of 15-30 years. With the maximum number of universities in the Northern India, the city produces a major share of the skilled workforce, giving it an edge over other cities, and often attracts young people from across the country seeking education and employment opportunities.

To gain insights from youth of the city for framing a vision and drive the agenda for MPD 2041, PRIA, in collaboration NIUA and other civil society organisations facilitated a discussion on 24 September 2020, from 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm.

The session witnessed the participation of individuals from different parts of the city, eager to share their concerns, perspectives, and aspirations. The discussions were primarily focused on three themes:

  1. Accessibility and quality of education infrastructure from the vantage point of youth
  2. Student Housing: Challenges and Availability
  3. Education to Employment

The discussion highlighted -- what more can be added to existing facilities or what new facilities can ensure quality education that is accessible to all. Participants shared the requirement of inclusive and safe spaces, increased hostel facilities, improved teacher-ratios, increased frequency of public transport, awareness about skill centers, and platforms for diverse young voices. Often young people are not given spaces to put forward views in decision-making processes. However, this space created a safe platform for young people to share their opinions and perspectives, and mark their voices.
