As India’s environmental challenges and their impacts on health continue to grow, there is a need for strategic and rigorous research and interventions that highlight and address the perspectives and experiences of communities directly impacted by environmental exposures and disasters. This need led to a multisectoral, multidisciplinary, and bilateral convening to discuss opportunities to advance participatory research for environmental health in India in February 2019.
It is in this background, PRIA International Academy (the academic vertical of Participatory Research in Asia – PRIA) and National Institute for Research on Environmental Health, Bhopal (one of the permanent institutes of the Indian Council of Medical Research – ICMR), identified the capacity gaps in the adoption and application of community based participatory research in environmental health research in India through joint discussion and deliberations. Both the institutions agreed to pull together its academic resources to develop a blended course (combination of online and field research) on Environmental Health and Community Based Participatory Research.
The overall purpose of this course is to develop an appreciation about the relevance and importance as well as skills for using Community Based Participatory Research methodology in environmental research studies in India.
The course will benefit the Graduate and Post-Graduate students pursuing medical studies, Ph.D. candidates pursuing medical research; Post Graduate students and Ph.D. candidates from such disciplines as Population Science/ Demography/ Physical/ Bio-Medical Anthropology/ Sociology; professionals associated with occupational and environmental health studies.
