International Women’s Day Celebrations By CGAMP, March 10, 2008
To mark the International Women’s Day, the Committee on Gender Awareness and Mainstreaming in PPIA (CGAMP) organised an event for all the Head Office staff on March 10, 2008. The gathering presented skits, shared thoughts, poems and other creative ideas on this occasion.
The event started with a flashback of some of the Women’s Day celebrations over the last few years. A presentation was made highlighting the achievements of women from different walks of life. Some recited poems highlighting the dilemmas faced by women at various junctures in life. A quiz about women, who have excelled in their respective fields, was also conducted.
Findings from PRIA’s studies undertaken in the past highlighting women’s plight with special reference to work carried out by them, including domestic work considered as unpaid labour and the working conditions of women in hazardous sectors were also shared. A skit about the troubles of women at the grassroots struggling to access information under the RTI was an eye opener for many. Another much appreciated skit highlighted the journey of a woman in an urban professional set up. The special provisions under the Income Tax Act for Women were also discussed.
On a lighter note, selecting a line from some Hindi song, all staff members were given some titles depicting their job profile and/or personal characteristics. In an effort to do something fun and different, words that the computer’s dictionary suggests for Indian names was listed out. So a Pradeep became pride/paraded or an Anand became amend by following the advice of computer!
This event attempted to bring out the creative side of the staff members who otherwise do not get an opportunity to share their thoughts and ideas. It also provided an opportunity to people to interact with members outside their core work groups.
