CGAMP Workshop on Strengthening Conducive Working Relationship Between the Male and Female PRIA Staff January 25, 2008

“Strengthening conducive working relationship between the male and female staff of PRIA” was the theme of the first workshop of the year organised on January 25, 2008 at the New Delhi office by the Committee on Gender Awareness and Mainstreaming in PRIA (CGAMP). Fifty-two staff members (21 women and 31 men) from all departments and levels of hierarchy participated in the workshop. Namrata Jaitli, Chairperson, CGAMP initiated the workshop with the thought that a conducive working relationship between the male and female staff is essential for better output in the workplace, and thus there is need to work towards it continually.

Two days before the workshop an e-survey was conducted on 18 randomly selected PRIA staff in Delhi. They were asked to present their views on the factors that according to then enable as well as hinder a conducive working relationship between men and women.

Out of the 11 people who responded, 10 were women. The findings were presented after which the 2-page note was distributed to everyone to read. All participants were then divided into six groups based on different departments, gender and hierarchy. They were asked to discuss and present their ideas on the factors that enable and hinder a conducive working relationship between male and female staff in PRIA. The group presentations opened the door for more discussions on the organisational culture, norms of behaviour and balancing of professional and personal relationships.

The workshop concluded with PRIA President Dr. Rajesh Tandon sharing his views with the gathering. He urged the members to analyse the male-female working relationship in PRIA from a socio-economic class lens and to also keep in mind the difference in the socialisation process of each individual. He also suggested following the path of self-regulation to strike a balance between professional and personal relationships.
